Amir has it all – a loving and accepting girlfriend, friends and a new job. He is healthy and has both arms and legs. And that is exactly the problem. After all, Amir is an apotemnophile – he obsessively dreams of an amputation. He would like his right leg to rot and fall off. This desire eats him up from the inside and keeps him from functioning normally. He feels unfulfilled and all he desires is a quick cut above the knee. He also spends hours painting self-portraits – in his vision, he sits smiling in his wheelchair, finally being himself. When he meets a like-minded woman who dreams of being blind, it seems that he will at last be able to achieve his goal. Will he be brave enough?

 A shocking idea, seemingly impossible to defend at first glance, and masterful execution are the hallmarks of the Norwegian director Viljar Bøe, who shocked the world with ‘Meg, Deg & Frank’ several years ago. In his latest film, Bøe proves that weaving stories about the innermost desires and twisted fantasies is his trademark. ‘Above the Knee’ is essentially a sad story of unfulfillment and the fear of rejection.
