Following his sister’s death, Francis Barnard arrives at a grim Spanish castle to uncover what really killed her. Her husband, Nicholas Medina, insists that she died of a mysterious illness, but Francis isn’t buying it. And who can blame him? “The Pit and the Pendulum” is a legendary entry in the filmography of Roger Corman, the master of low-budget cinema and Hollywood rebel. It’s both a cult classic and a wild journey through dark corridors and family trauma. Corman took considerable liberties with Edgar Allan Poe’s writing, yet created a film that bears his unmistakable stamp of quality. Dark humour mingles with genuine terror, while the whole film is steeped in a gloomy Gothic atmosphere, heightened by Corman’s masterful ability to ratchet up the tension at unexpected moments. This is a horror film where everyone is scheming, and even the corpses have skeletons in their closets. A classic no horror fan, or indeed any film lover, should miss. Shot in around 15 days, “The Pit and the Pendulum” has continued to amaze audiences since its 1961 premiere with its deft blend of farce and terrifying suspense.

“The Pit and the Pendulum” was the second film in Corman’s series of Poe adaptations, and its enormous success prompted him to make more. The eerie and strangely sexy Nicholas Medina is played by legendary Vincent Price, a horror icon and an actor without whom the genre would have a far sadder face. Joining him in this Corman masterpiece are John Kerr, Barbara Steele and Luana Anders, among others. Corman’s film had a major influence on the work of Italian giallo masters, while the king of horror himself, Stephen King, named it one of the most important horror films made after 1960.
