MOTHER OF FLIES
A powerful, unsettling, and painfully realistic folk horror
Mickey, a music student, has been battling cancer for years. When the illness reaches its final, hopeless stage, she turns to magic in desperation. Together with her skeptical father, she travels deep into the forest to seek the help of an ancient witch. The witch promises to help — but her aid will come at a price. At the same time, the witch begins to settle her own scores with the world, and her supposed altruism starts to take on a darker meaning. As do the swarms of flies that follow her everywhere she goes.
“Mother of Flies” is a raw, disturbing folk horror, shot with such realism that it feels like we are witnessing real events unfold. The camera never looks away — from death, from decay, from the brutality of life — leaving scars on the viewer’s emotions. This is not a film you can easily forget. It’s both a tale of terror and a haunting meditation on loneliness in the face of death, on family ties, and on the fear of the inevitable.
“Mother of Flies” is one of this year’s most remarkable horror films — winner of the prestigious Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal and yet another triumph for the Adams family, who have been dominating the world of American indie horror in recent years. John, Zelda, and Toby Adams not only write, direct, edit, and compose the music for their films but also star in them, lending their work a consistent creative vision.
Like their earlier “Hellbender” and “Where the Devil Roams,” “Mother of Flies” is steeped in the aesthetics of ’70s folk horror. With its raw power and thematic depth, it stands as the Adams family’s crowning achievement — proof that a singular artistic vision can eclipse even the biggest studio budget.
