Saỷara

Revenge cinema and a cruelty feast in the new film by the director of “Baskin”

Saỷara carries a dark side within, but she disguises herself well. She cleans and mops a trendy gym by day, and trains by herself at night. She is a martial arts champion from Turkmenistan but doesn’t put her talents to use. She once promised her father, a Soviet sambo master, that she would never use what he taught her. But she’ll have to. When her older sister is killed by a group of privileged blokes, Saỷara cuts her hair and begins a meticulous revenge. Compared to her, John Wick is a meek retiree, and the bride from “Kill Bill” is just a benign lady in a yellow tracksuit. Saỷara is ruthless in her vendetta. She murders without batting an eye, boils with rage and does not refrain from cruelty. She can kill with any object, and when none is at hand, she will use her teeth. Gnawed windpipes, broken limbs, fountains of blood and crushed bodies. “Sayara” is a festival of cruelty that gives food for thought. Has the protagonist gone too far? Are there no rules to revenge? However, there is little time to think about this during the screening. “Saỷara” shocks with vivid violence, is laboriously written, executed in a raw style to shock the viewer and linger with them.

The director and writer of this piece is Can Evrenol, whose work includes the award-winning horror film “Baskin” about police officers who descend into hell itself. “Saỷara” is a genre mix of gore, action-thriller and drama, a film that follows the tradition of revenge cinema and adds something special to it. The vigilante is portrayed by the excellent Duygu Kocabiyik, whose gaze alone is mesmerizing.

The guest of the meeting after the screening will be the film’s director, Can Evrenol
