Xian and Ikki have been married for years. They run a Chinese buffet in Madrid, barely making ends meet and teetering on the edge of financial ruin every day. One day, a customer accidentally dies in their buffet. They decide to hide the body and carry on as if nothing happened. That’s how they start solving all their problems. The buffet’s walk-in freezer turns out to be surprisingly spacious. But is this buffet big enough for two deeply unhappy people and a pile of corpses?

“Buffet Libre” is a daring, absurd, and shamelessly macabre black comedy. It’s a story about the end of love and the breakdown of a marriage, but it gives just as much attention to cannibalism. It’s a film that delights from beginning to end, both surreal and repulsive. Despite all the grotesque details, “Buffet Libre” remains surprisingly appetizing, even if the characters’ decisions can stick in your throat like a bone. The humor strikes without warning, and every new scene adds another helping of madness to the mix.

Behind the camera is Zoe Berriatúa, an award-winning European actor, screenwriter, and director. Yan Huang is mesmerizing and fearless as Xian. On screen, she is precise, cold, and hypnotic, even when everything around her descends into complete chaos. Few actresses could portray a woman so desperately starved for love with such dignity and inner strength.
