MERMAID
A love story with a sea monster and a backdrop of gang-related violence
Life has dealt Doug not just a bad hand, but a greasy one. Divorced, slow-witted, mostly unemployed, and addicted to drugs — he’s no Prince Charming. But when Doug discovers a battered mermaid, everything changes.
This mermaid isn’t Ariel — she’s a classic sea monster barely fitting into a bathtub — but Doug doesn’t mind. For once, he isn’t alone. If only he hadn’t crossed the local criminals…
“Mermaid” is a grotesquely charming horror-comedy about desperation and loneliness — and about a meme-worthy Florida Man, the kind whose bizarre misadventures end up in viral news headlines. This is the guy who somehow got eaten by an alligator in his own bathroom, found a 300-foot python in his backyard, and has been divorced nineteen times.
Director Tyler Cornack, cult favorite behind “Butt Boy,” delivers another outrageous and darkly funny story. Expect disturbingly realistic mermaid makeup (Avery Potemri plays the mer-creature), gory demises, absurdist humor, and killer supporting turns from genre icons Robert Patrick and Kevin Dunn.
“Mermaid” is an offbeat love story, a tale of emancipation and the fight for dignity — and a nasty creature feature. One of those films you won’t be able to forget.
