Your Monster
A love story with a monster in the backdrop
Laura’s life has just gone south. She was supposed to be the star of a new Broadway show and live happily ever after with the play’s director, Jacob. But her boyfriend has dumped her and, even worse, sacked her from the role. The girl returns to her family home and spends her days weeping and slumbering in her dressing gown. One day she gets into monstrous trouble. Her howling and wailing gets on the nerves of the monster that has been living in her closet for years. The monster gives Laura two weeks to move out – otherwise, he will rip out her windpipe, and she should mark his words.
“Your Monster: is a brilliant horror film, a rom-com and a musical, all rolled into one. It skillfully draws on genre clichés, adding a motif known to everyone from “Beauty and the Beast”, and presents the story of Laura and the monster with a fair amount of flair. “Your Monster” is a charming love story merely on the surface. Caroline Linda’s film is first and foremost a story about why you shouldn’t push away your inner monster. It will come out of the closet sooner or later anyway.
The charming and severely unstable Laura is portrayed here by the wonderful Melissa Barrera, an actress known for the new instalments of the cult series “Scream”. Underneath the heavy and monstrous characterisation comes Tommy Dewey, and in one of the supporting roles appears Meghann Fahy (“White Lotus”, “The Perfect Couple”), who is just climbing the ladder of fame. “Your Monster” screened at Sundance this year in the Midnight section and won the Audience Award at the London edition of the festival.
