Suzzanna: The Queen of Black Magic
The Indonesian queen of horror, an icon, legend and celebrity you are hearing about for the first time
Even hardcore horror fans might not know her. Suzzanna is, after all, an icon of horror cinema, but Asian, a queen of terror and black magic straight from Indonesia, an expert in portraying phantoms, witches, corrupted and liberated women (which, sadly, for some is still the same thing). A fascinating and talented personage, and, as is often the case, unhappy in her private life.
“Suzzanna: The Queen of Black Magic” welcomes viewers into a world that they visit very rarely. After all, Indonesian films can hardly be counted as mainstream, and neither can their stars. Suzzanna, however, was one of the biggest stars in Asia until she died in 2008, receiving multiple awards for “best screen antagonist.” It was suspected that she owed her youthful appearance to witchcraft, and her piercing gaze and mystical presence became her trademarks.
“Suzzanna: The Queen of Black Magic” is a solid piece of filmmaking that treats viewers to a hefty chunk of cinema history. What else could you expect from David Gregory, who created the fascinating and hilarious documentary “Enter the Clones of Bruce,” which we had the pleasure to show you last year? Gregory’s credits as a director and producer include nearly three hundred productions (including “Colour out of Space”), and he leads the cult studio Severin Films, which brings new releases of famous genre cinema hits to the world.
