Her Will Be Done

A haunting horror about a young woman marked by a curse

Twenty-year-old Nawojka lives with her family in the French countryside, working on the farm while dreaming of veterinary school. Shy and tightly controlled by her father and brothers, she fears she has inherited something from her late mother: strange episodes and visions that are now beginning to haunt her too. Her life takes a turn when Sandra returns to the village, a fiercely independent woman with pink hair and a leg brace. The villagers have never forgiven Sandra for her past and would rather see her gone. Nawojka, however, ignores their warnings and finds herself irresistibly drawn to Sandra.

“Her Will Be Done” is a raw, sensual Polish-French folk horror set in a bleak reality far removed from the postcard image of France. As Nawojka’s story unfolds, everyday rural life slowly gives way to nightmare, where mud, sweat, blood and burgeoning desire mingle with an eerie fairy-tale quality. The village becomes a place where old curses still hold sway, and where fear and narrow-mindedness can quickly turn into a witch hunt. Gritty cinematography, a subtly grainy image and an atmosphere of decay make it increasingly difficult to tell where reality ends and horror begins.

Maria Wróbel plays Nawojka, capturing her transformation from a withdrawn, obedient girl into a young woman discovering her own desires and strength. Roxane Mesquida brings Sandra a fierce sense of freedom, energy and unapologetic boldness. “Her Will Be Done” is the second feature by Julia Kowalski, a French filmmaker of Polish descent, who once again explores family, exclusion and female sexuality.
