GOOD BOY
An original, gripping, and deeply unsettling horror told from a dog’s-eye view
Indy is a golden-coated, adorable retriever and Todd’s most loyal friend. But the days when Indy’s biggest concern was whether someone would throw him the ball are long gone. Together with Todd, he moves to the countryside, into a run-down family home where something dark is lurking. Indy doesn’t understand what’s happening — he only knows that Todd is in danger.
But is the greatest threat really outside? Todd suffers from fits of uncontrollable coughing, sometimes disappearing for far too long, and returns exhausted. Indy summons every ounce of canine determination and courage to protect Todd from what seems inevitable.
“Good Boy” is a genuinely terrifying horror film — and for dog owners, it will feel like a punch to the solar plexus. The director stunned audiences at the South by Southwest Film Festival not only with expertly crafted scares but also with a moving meditation on death and the helplessness of animals in the face of their owners’ pain. Expect strong emotions — and expect dog owners to go home after the screening, give their pets an extra treat, and take them for a longer walk.
Shot entirely from a dog’s perspective, the camera never leaves Indy’s side, allowing us to see the world literally at his eye level. This formal choice makes “Good Boy” one of the most unique genre films in years. It took 3 years and 400 shooting days to achieve this effect — and the result is breathtaking. Indy, the star of the film, is actually the director’s own dog — his very own “leading man.”
