During a violent storm, Anna unexpectedly turns up at her daughter Alice’s home. She brings with her a secret that could change everything Alice knows about her family. Twenty years earlier, after her daughter suffered a tragic accident, Anna made a pact with a mysterious woman. Now its consequences have returned, and the past is coming to collect its debt.
“The Spiral” is a dark tale that blends family drama, psychological thriller and horror. Paolo Strippoli builds tension around family secrets, guilt and an obsessive need to regain control over one’s own fate. A suffocating atmosphere and an eerie, fairy-tale quality gradually give way to an increasingly brutal story about the price of trying to cheat destiny.
Directed by Paolo Strippoli, the filmmaker behind “A Classic Horror Story” and “The Holy Boy”, the film stars Jasmine Trinca, Romana Maggiora Vergano, Adriano Giannini and Valeria Bruni Tedeschi. “The Spiral” premiered in competition at the Venice Film Festival and was selected by Italy as its entry for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.
