PRESENCE
Mesmerizing tale from Steven Soderbergh
Steven Soderbergh returns with a film that defies genre conventions and redefines the concept of a thriller. “Presence” is a hypnotic tale of a family who, after moving into a new suburban home, begins to feel… a presence. But it’s not ghosts that are the scariest part here…
Balancing between thriller and psychological drama, with a touch of supernatural dread and a unique narrative approach, Soderbergh’s new film, much like the cult classic “A Ghost Story,” creates an extraordinary atmosphere of unease and mystery. It becomes an equally captivating and masterfully crafted story about family secrets that increasingly seep through the walls of the house.
“Presence” is an exceptional film – the entire story is told from the perspective of a spirit that cannot leave the house. The camera shows only what this invisible presence sees, becoming a silent but omnipresent witness to the family’s dramas. Thanks to Soderbergh’s brilliant cinematography (credited under his pseudonym Peter Andrews), the film gains a unique atmosphere – claustrophobic, suffocating, yet intimate – where the line between the visible and the invisible nearly disappears.
In the leading roles: the stunning Lucy Liu, known from “Charlie’s Angels” and the cult “Kill Bill” series, and Julia Fox, whose performance captivated audiences in “Uncut Gems.”
Soderbergh, a master of narrative precision, delivers a tense portrait of everyday life disrupted by something unseen – something that, with each passing day, becomes more real, more tangible. It is a story about the unspoken, the hidden, beneath the surface – within a family, within a home, within the human psyche.
