ANGEL’S EGG
Oniryczna animacja twórcy „Ghost in the Shell” w odnowionej wersji 4K
The action of this legendary film by Mamoru Oshii takes place in a primordial, cataclysm-stricken world – a reality where aimless people live under a mechanical sun. It is here that two nameless figures meet: a blonde girl with sad eyes and a young man who unsettles her. The girl cares for a mysterious egg, believing that an angel will hatch from it. The boy urges her to break the shell – only then can she discover the secret hidden inside. Together, they traverse a desolate world made of bronze, ruins, mechanical innards, and relics of past eras, leading to an allegorical conclusion.
Mamoru Oshii, director of the cult classics “Ghost in the Shell” and the famous Polish-Japanese co-production “Avalon” starring Małgorzata Foremniak, created here a philosophical and ambitious experiment filled with intelligent symbolism, biblical motifs, and dreamlike aesthetics. Over four decades of interviews, Oshii has explained the meanings of particular scenes, the ending, and his fascination with hope as something that may reside within the mystical egg.
“Angel’s Egg,” created in collaboration with visual artist Yoshitaka Amano, one of the leading figures in anime, premiered in 1985. Critics immediately recognized it as a refined, ambitious work of art, though it took four decades for “Angel’s Egg” to receive the global recognition it deserves. A testament to this is this year’s world premiere of the digitally restored version of “Angel’s Egg” at the Cannes Film Festival.
