The Second Act

Straight out of Cannes, the latest work by the king of the absurd, Quentin Dupieux

Florence is obsessed with David, but David is not obsessed with Florence. He asks his buddy to lift the burden of his unwanted love and seduce the gal who is getting on his nerves. They decide to put this plan into action during a meeting with Florence’s father, in a dingy diner somewhere along the highway.

Wondering how a film with such a plot is got into our festival programme? Easy. “The Second Act” is the latest work by Quentin Dupieux, the French maestro of surrealist cinema and absurd sense of humour, a connoisseur of risk, a celluloid genius of madness and bravado. In “The Second Act”, he mercilessly pokes fun at the film industry, indie cinema, political correctness and artificial intelligence’s threat to artists. As always in his work, the initially simple story quickly becomes enjoyably complex, the plot twists are delightful, and the dialogue strikes you with its sharpness and wit. What else can you expect from a filmmaker who has given us such gems as “Smoking Causes Coughing”, “Incredible but True”, “Mandibules”, “Deerskin” and “Rubber”? It is hard as hell to imagine the Splat!FilmFest programme without his latest film, so here it is – straight from this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Starring the stars of French and international cinema, multi-César Award nominees: Léa Seydoux, Vincent Lindon, playing a caricature of himself, and Louis Garrel.
