An Indonesian Gem of Contemporary Horror Cinema

Two sisters work off a family debt in a factory where the workers never sleep and their bodies are taken over by a dark force. A surreal Indonesian body horror about exploitation, steeped in grotesque imagery and suffocating dread.

The workers at this wig and mannequin factory are not allowed to sleep. Sleep keeps them away from their jobs, and productivity is all that matters. When one of the workers takes her own life, her daughters take her place to repay the family’s debt to the factory. They soon discover that something terrifying lurks in the grim factory halls. A dark force takes over the workers’ bodies, grotesquely mutilates them, and seems to take a peculiar pleasure in it. Surrounded by mannequins, artificial limbs, tangled masses of hair, and rooms thick with sweat, dust, and exhaustion, the protagonists will fight not only for their lives but also for the dignity of everyone trapped there.

“Sleep No More” is an Indonesian gem of contemporary horror cinema, hovering between nightmare and waking life. Its dreamlike, surreal aesthetic perfectly captures the characters’ physical and psychological exhaustion. Here, severed limbs grow back, while losing an eye at work becomes a source of pride for the indoctrinated workers. The film creates a sense of unease from its very first moments. Director Edwin builds tension with remarkable precision, while “Sleep No More” impresses with its evocative special effects and oppressive atmosphere. It is a horror film rooted in the aesthetics of 1990s genre cinema, yet painfully relevant to the present day.

“Sleep No More” combines everything that horror does best with a sharp story about a world in which human beings become part of the production line. Along the way, it delivers a racing pulse, sleepless nights, and the distinctly unpleasant feeling that somewhere nearby, you can smell burning hair.

Edwin is an internationally acclaimed filmmaker. In 2014, he was nominated for the Golden Bear at the Berlinale for “Postcards from the Zoo”, and a few years later he took home the Best Film award from Locarno for “Vengeance Is Mine, All Others Pay Cash”. “Sleep No More” has screened at festivals including the Berlinale, the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival, and the Fantasia International Film Festival.
