TROMA’S WAR
Random Americans vs terrorists
A plane carrying a cross-section of American society crashes in the jungle. From the twisted wreckage and mangled bodies, the survivors slowly emerge. It soon becomes clear that this is only the beginning of their ordeal: the crash has left them stranded on an isolated island ruled by neo-Nazis. Their leader — a maniacal, blue-eyed blond with a grotesque German accent — oversees experiments carried out in the spirit of the Third Reich. The survivors have no choice but to fight back in a bloody struggle for survival. And if a few breasts are revealed and a couple of erotic scenes are thrown in along the way — well, that’s a sacrifice they’re willing to make.
“Troma’s War” is a macabre, irreverent adventure comedy that Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz rushed into production following the success of “The Toxic Avenger” and “Class of Nuke ’Em High.” Conjoined twin brothers, a parody of Oliver Stone’s “Platoon,” sex, violence, and torture inflicted by maniacs in the advanced stages of AIDS — the screenplay was written by Tromaville’s brightest mind, Lloyd Kaufman himself. How this twisted story came to be, and whether Kaufman ever had second thoughts while creating it, are questions you’ll be able to ask him in person, as he will be one of the special guests at this year’s edition of the festival.
Initially, the MPAA — the organization responsible for assigning film ratings — refused to grant “Troma’s War” even the most restrictive classification, “R” (Restricted – for adults only). Kaufman was forced to remove scenes referencing the AIDS epidemic, yet even then the MPAA still tried to block the film’s release. According to Kaufman, the head of the MPAA told Michael Herz over the phone that “Troma’s War” was simply “a damn bad movie.” At our festival, however, it will be screened in its uncensored version.
