This story about a deranged old woman who kidnaps a mother and daughter from a shopping mall is not for the faint of heart. Even those who consider themselves veterans of cinematic depravity may find their stomachs churning. What drives this senior citizen? Her love for her son — a monstrous mutant with a Lovecraftian penis. She wants the kidnapped woman to sleep with him, insisting that abduction is somehow more in line with the teachings of the Bible than hiring a sex worker. Sounds like the plot of the most hardcore film of the year? That’s just the beginning.

The film opens with spinning penises and buttocks, features meat-made animated characters, and even a musical number that feels like a Judy Garland fever dream — if Garland had been a degenerate maniac.

Watching the blasphemous, censorship-defying, politically incorrect black comedy “Fuck My Son!” feels like enduring a prolonged case of stomach flu. For Todd Rohal — director and co-writer (with Johnny Ryan) — nothing is sacred. No taboo goes untouched or unmocked. Applause is due to Tipper Newton, who delivers an intense, almost deadly-serious performance as the kidnapped woman in a state of panic.

But “Fuck My Son!” isn’t just a deranged movie that will age you twenty years by the time the credits roll. It’s a gauntlet thrown at the face of mainstream cinema — proof that film can still provoke when it pushes both creator and viewer past their limits. This is a work so grotesque it’s hard to believe it exists — and yet it premiered at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival.

Rohal has said in interviews that adult cinema will save Hollywood — and he’ll keep making it until they arrest him. Which is good to know, because after “Fuck My Son!” you’ll leave the theater not just nauseated but also pondering freedom of speech. And that’s not something most audiences expect from a movie that features a two-meter penis
