DEAD LOVER
A love to die for – and then a wild ride
The heroine of this twisted horror-comedy is a gravedigger who has been burying corpses for so long that she has completely absorbed their smell. She reeks of death and decay, her body carrying the sweet scent of corpses. Because of this, along with her less-than-charming appearance and difficult personality, she is lonely – though, like everyone, she dreams of true love.
One day, her wish comes true. Over a fresh grave, she falls in love at first sight with a slow-witted aristocrat mourning his sister. Not only does he not flee when he catches her unsettling scent, but he even appreciates it. Their happiness and wild sexual encounters, however, are short-lived – the man dies tragically. Driven by longing, selfishness, and a desire to play God, the gravedigger decides – like Victor Frankenstein – to bring him back to life.
The result is equal parts grotesque and hilarious. Laughter catches in the viewer’s throat, as giggles mix with shivers of disgust.
“Dead Lover” is a bizarre comedic body horror inspired by Gothic classics, most notably Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein.” Fans of “Re-Animator” and the cult “Frankenhooker” will recognize nods to those films as well. Director Grace Glowicki, who also stars in the film, sought to make her latest work feel like an experimental stage play, reflecting her theatrical roots. She shot “Dead Lover” on 16mm film, in black-painted interiors, with the set design constantly shifting during production.
The result is an original, grotesque work that parodies classic horror cinema, drawing inspiration from Mel Brooks’ comedic style and exploitation film traditions. This is a film for viewers who enjoy cinematic experiments – and for whom a sexually charged, blood-red fingernail won’t cross the line. “Dead Lover” premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is a strong contender to become a new cult classic of independent cinema.

Her debut feature, Tito, premiered at the 2019 SXSW Film Festival, where it won the Adam Yauch Hornblower Award which honors “a filmmaker whose work strives to be wholly its own, without regard for norms or desire to conform.” Richard Brody at the New Yorker called it “an instant classic of acting”. The film was acquired by Visit Films and distributed by Factory 25.
Glowicki has starred in many acclaimed independent films such as Strawberry Mansion (Sundance ‘21), Until Branches Bend (TIFF ‘22, SXSW ‘23), Booger (Fantasia ’23), The Heirloom (Rotterdam ‘24), and “Her Friend Adam” (SUNDANCE ‘16, SXSW ‘16) for which she won a Sundance Special Jury Award for Outstanding Performance.
