Timestalker

Eternal sunshine of the gore fantasy

Agnes is down on her luck. She is always falling in love with the wrong man. The exact same wrong man. Whether she lives in Puritan times, is an 18th-century aristocrat or a seemingly freethinking woman in the fitness fever in the 1980s, her eye will eventually set on a mysterious brunette with wet eyes. Agnes will fall head over heels in love, and not long after, she will die a gruesome death. In every lifetime, in every incarnation, she always puts her bets on the same guy. And it always ends badly.

“Timestalker” is a hilarious yet sadness-soaked story of how we repeat harmful patterns. And how difficult it is to break out of this downward spiral of choices. Completely blinded by love, Agnes turns a blind eye to the flaws of her beloved: just a nasty, narcissistic bloke you can only build a heavily toxic relationship with. As you travel with Agnes through the subsequent eras, you will find yourself wondering whether you too have fallen into a similar trap. But there are no obvious answers to how to break out of it. “Timestalker” is not a pathetic story of the triumph of the will, but a brilliant comedy, skillfully written and performed, and executed with a style that will impress even the pickiest of viewers.

The film was written, directed and starred by the excellent Alice Lowe, a British actress and comedian. She invited Nick Frost, with whom she had previously met on the set of the cult “Hot Fuzz”.

The cast also includes Jacob Anderson (“Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire”), the wonderfully smug Aneurin Barnard as the ill-fated love interest and Kate Dickie, known from the horror film “The VVitch: A New-England Folktale”.
