Mid-19th century. An Afrikaner settler family and their unhinged British companion set out across the vast Kalahari Desert. They are determined to reclaim land they believe is theirs, but the journey soon turns into a fight for survival. Hunger, thirst, growing distrust, and madness begin to tear their relationships apart, while the arrival of a mysterious wanderer offers neither comfort nor answers. Alongside the dry wind, forces older than colonial ambitions begin to close in around the travelers. The line between paranoia and madness grows as blurred as marks drawn in the sand, and the group finds itself stalked by an ancient evil they cannot even name.

“The Trek” is one of the most original films in this year’s program. It takes the classic Western and relocates the myth of the Wild West to another part of the world: Africa, right into the heart of colonial hell and local folklore. There is no conventional battle between good and evil here, but rather a slow descent into moral decay. The combination of slow-burning horror, stark historical realism, and a crisis of humanity is genuinely striking. “The Trek” is beautifully shot, yet so grounded in reality that it feels as if a filmmaker with a camera had somehow traveled back in time to 19th-century Africa. It is a film that builds tension and fear with remarkable skill, never resorting to cheap tricks to get a reaction from the audience. It is rich in atmosphere, breathtaking cinematography, and genuine horror.

Meekaaeel Adam is both the director and cinematographer. For the South African filmmaker, “The Trek” marks his feature directorial debut. His visual imagination is not merely decorative, but one of the story’s central forces, as demonstrated by his cinematography award at Fantaspoa. The cast includes Morné Visser as Karel Uys, Maurice Carpede as the mysterious Atshumao, Rob van Vuuren as Henry Blake, as well as Trix Vivier and Leah Lindeque. The screenplay was written by James C. Williamson, J. Hannah Massyn, and Sandulela Asanda. Together, they have turned the desert, the colonial Western, and an old folk tale into something fresh, skillfully avoiding all the obvious paths.
